The Lego company opened in 1932 when Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen started making toys and games for a living. He struggled to make payments in the depths of the Great Depression, but the small prototypes he had made of items like ironing planks and ladders had superb potential as children’s toys. He named the organization Lego after two Danish words and phrases, leg and godt, which means “play well. ”
